Crossing the finish line – how to stay motivated and finish the race

Hello peeps! I hope that you are well.

Our spiritual journey in the book of Philippians (3:13-14), is compared to a long-distance race. It’s a slow and steady pace with many steep hills, low valleys, along with running on the flat. It is not a fast sprint or a quick dash but a long and often challenging race.

If you have ever ran anywhere, especially long distance, you will understand that it’s all about endurance, and preparation beforehand can make all the difference from a hard and gruelling race, to a race that is more pleasant because of the training you did beforehand.

So how can we endure our spiritual race and cope with what life may throw at us?

Here are a few points to bear in mind:

  • Remember your training: Just like a marathon, our lives are the training ground. Before any race there are many months of training and a special diet is involved before they embark on the final race. Likewise, God has given us a training manual – the bible to help us on our journey. It’s important to dip into it daily, to get a good dose of God in our lives and to get wisdom for certain situations that we are perhaps facing.
  • Keep thing fresh – a fresh encounter with God: God is the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb 13:8) but we are not. We change every day so to keep our spiritual life fresh we need to get into God’s presence daily. Prayer is the lifeforce of any Christian. Prayer gives us power, if we do not pray we are powerless and will be an easy target for the devil (1 Peter 5:8). We ought to get a fresh top up every day of prayer and spending time in God’s presence. He loves to spend time with us so make a priority to spend time with Him.
  • Stamina – keep going despite set-backs: Set-backs are inevitable. We cannot live the Christian life without some kind of set-back. Jesus said, “in this world we will have trouble but take heart, I have overcome the world!” (John 16:33). Maybe you have a change in circumstances? You lose your job, a child becomes ill, things are not going well in church and you cannot see how God will turn things around for you. These kinds of things will come our way for many reasons, sometimes it’s just life, sometimes it’s the devil, sometimes God is testing our faith but whatever the reason – keep pressing on towards the goal. Do not be discouraged! but take everything to God in prayer and He will move for you when the time is right.
  • Stay focussed – keep our eyes on the prize: The reality is that this world is passing away and one day we will pass away too and live somewhere forever. If we remain saved and keep our relationship with God, then we can be assured that heaven will be our home and that we will be with the Lord forever. We will be free from sin and be made perfect and live with our God forever. We will hear the words, “well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of the Lord.” God will give us our rewards for everything we did for him while on the Earth and we will enjoy living in paradise.

So, do not grow weary in doing good and serving Him while on Earth because God sees all that we do for Him and will reward us one day. Keep your eyes fixed firmly on the prize and do not be discouraged from serving God but keep pressing on towards the finish line and finish the race well.

Thanks for reading, feel free to share!

Sarah.
